Custom patterned fixed-blade knife with a striped natural-material handle on a clear display stand
Where History Meets Art

Made by hand from materials with a story.

We turn dinosaur gembone, mammoth tooth, meteorite, stone, and other distinctive materials into knife handles, buckles, jewelry, and custom work. Every piece is shaped one at a time, with its pattern and history in mind.

Muonionalusta Meteorite Knife with Dinosaur Gembone Handles

$4,000

The blade of this knife is made from Muonionalusta meteorite and displays the distinctive Widmanstätten pattern that makes this iron meteorite so recognizable. The metal inlays in the handle are made from the same Muonionalusta meteorite, allowing that natural pattern to continue into the handle. The meteorite blade is welded to a Damascus steel handle beneath stainless steel bolsters. The handle scales are made from two beautiful varieties of dinosaur gembone, displaying rich red and gray tones along with a variety of naturally colored fossilized cells. Both the knife and sheath were made entirely by me and are laser engraved or stamped with the Rough Cut Lapidary (RCL) logo. Also included are a custom display case and a certificate of authenticity. Price: $4,000 USD

Late Jurassic fossil bone from the Morrison Formation

Our dinosaur gembone comes from private land in the Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming region. Cutting and polishing reveal the mineral-filled structure preserved inside the bone.

Mammoth tooth

Layered enamel with a different pattern in every cut

Most of the mammoth tooth we use comes from Siberia. Its enamel and dentine form bold loops, bands, and islands of color after polishing.

From raw material to finished piece

The work begins long before the final polish.

Before anything is cut, we study the slab or scale to find the strongest area and the most interesting pattern. The material guides the rest of the job.

Study the material

We check thickness, fractures, stability, and pattern so we know which part of the material will work best.

Choose the orientation

Turning a slab a few degrees can change the pattern completely. We position it to fit the project and show the material well.

Shape it to fit

The material is cut, ground, and fitted to the knife, buckle, jewelry setting, or other piece.

Finish the surface

Sanding and polishing bring out the color and structure. The completed work is then photographed and described in plain language.

Custom work

A custom piece can start with a knife, a material, or a rough idea.

Some customers already have the knife or buckle. Others have a favorite material and need help deciding how to use it. Either way, we start by talking through the goal and looking at what the material can realistically do.

From there, we work out the design, price, and timing before the cutting begins.

The gallery is a record of sold and completed work. It is a good place to see past material combinations, styles, and ideas for a future project.
