About Montana AgateMontana agate is a translucent variety of chalcedony best known from the Yellowstone River basin and surrounding gravel deposits in southeastern Montana. Many pieces contain distinctive dendritic, moss-like, or landscape-like inclusions. The dark branching patterns are commonly associated with manganese oxides, while red, orange, and brown coloration can result from iron oxides. Montana agate is generally durable and takes a high polish, making it suitable for jewelry and small lapidary work.
