About Montana AgateMontana agate is a translucent variety of chalcedony best known from the Yellowstone River basin and surrounding gravel deposits in southeastern Montana. Many pieces contain distinctive dendritic, moss-like, or landscape-like inclusions. The dark branching patterns are commonly associated with manganese oxides, while red, orange, and brown coloration can result from iron oxides. Montana agate may also show banding, plumes, tubes, or other internal structures, which makes each polished piece visually unique.
