Trapper Knife with Dinosaur Gembone Handles and Aletai Meteorite Inlay
Past work, not for saleThis trapper knife features polished dinosaur gembone handles accented with Aletai meteorite inlay. The fossilized bone has distinctive natural color and pattern, contrasted by the metallic meteorite detail. The knife measures 3.5 inches closed, with blade lengths of 2 5/8 inches. This piece has been sold and is preserved in the Rough Cut Lapidary gallery as an example of past work.
About Dinosaur GemboneDinosaur gembone is fossilized dinosaur bone that has been mineralized over geologic time. Much of the dinosaur bone we use comes from the Late Jurassic Morrison Formation, which occurs across parts of Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, and surrounding areas. All dinosaur bone used by Rough Cut Lapidary is legally sourced from private land.
Aletai is an iron meteorite. Iron meteorites can display a Widmanstätten pattern after polishing and etching. This natural crystalline structure is formed by intergrown iron-nickel minerals during extremely slow cooling within the meteorite's parent asteroid.
